The Soma Nomaoi is a magnificent horse festival with over 1,000 years of history. How did this event originate, and what purpose has it served throughout its continuation? First, let's learn the foundational information and prepare to enjoy the Soma Nomaoi.
Regarding the Generational Notation of the Soma Family and the Soma Domain Lords
When discussing the Soma Nomaoi, there is a slightly confusing aspect. This pertains to the generational notation for the Soma family and the Soma domain lords.
The origins of the Soma Nomai are traced to when the Soma family descended to Ota Village, Namegata District, Mutsu Province (present-day Nakaota, Haramachi Ward, Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture). Therefore, the first head of the Soma domain lords is designated as **Soma Morotsune**, and he is recorded as the 1st generation.
However, the founding ancestor (first generation) of the entire Sōma family is Taira no Masakado. Consequently, Sōma Morotsune is the 12th generation of the Sōma family. It might be confusing at first, but remembering this will help you understand the history of the Sōma Nomai more deeply.
Why is the Sōma Nomai held?
The Sōma Nomai is not just a festival. It is a source of regional pride, an event deeply imbued with equestrian culture and the spirit of the samurai. Here are some points you might be wondering about:
