【Vol.13】Before Starting the Soma Nomaoi School

The Soma Nomaoi (Sōma Nomaoi) is a grand equestrian festival with a history spanning more than a thousand years. How did this event come into being, and for what purpose has it been carried on? Let’s start by learning the foundational information and prepare to fully enjoy the Soma Nomaoi.

On the Generational Notation of the Soma Family and the Soma Domain Lords

When talking about the Soma Nomaoi, there’s a part that can be a bit confusing. That’s the way the lineage of the Soma family and the Soma domain lords is recorded.

The origins of the Soma Nomaoi festival are said to date back to when the Soma clan relocated to Ota Village in Namekata District, Mutsu Province (present-day Nakadaita, Haramachi Ward, Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture). For this reason, **Soma Morotsune (そうまもろつね)** is regarded as the first head of the Soma Domain’s ruling family, and is recorded as the first generation.

However, the founding ancestor (first generation) of the entire Sōma family is Taira no Masakado. For this reason, Sōma Morotsune is considered the 12th generation of the Sōma lineage. It may seem confusing at first, but keeping this in mind will help you gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Sōma Nomaoi.

Why is the Soma Nomaoi held?

Soma Nomaoi is not just a festival. It represents the pride of the region—an event deeply infused with horse culture and the samurai spirit. Here are a few points that many of you may be curious about:

  • Why a horse festival in the Soma region?
    • The Soma region has had a deep connection with horses since ancient times, and this culture has been nurtured along with the history of the Soma clan.
  • Why do they ride horses in armor?
    • The Nomaoi was also a place to hone the skills of samurai. For that reason, they go out into battle dressed in armor.
  • What do they actually do?
    • During the festival, there are events that allow you to feel the strength of the horses and samurai, such as the sacred flag battle and armor horse racing.

Experience the Allure of the Soma Nomaoi

The appeal of this event may not be fully conveyed at first glance. However, as you learn about its background and come to understand the meanings behind the armor and horse trappings, the sight of those taking part in the procession—and the festival as a whole—will begin to feel even more captivating.

Message from the Principal

I, too, took part in the Soma Nomaoi for the first time when I was 14 years old (in 1988). From then until 2021, I continued to ride out each year, learning many things from my seniors. Thanks to their guidance, I came to understand the deep meaning behind the Soma Nomaoi and was able to enjoy the event even more.

From here on, I’d like for all of us to explore the history and culture of the Soma Nomaoi together. Let’s enjoy this fascinating and profoundly rich world side by side!
