【Episode 11】Soma Nomaoi Trivia: 'Armor'

At the Soma Nomaoi festival, mounted warriors don armor and ride into battle. Just how heavy is this armor, really?

The Weight of Armor

The weight of armor varies depending on the equipment, but averages around 13 to 15 kg. Imagine the weight of a modern hiking backpack to grasp just how heavy armor is. Some suits weigh even more than that.

While iron is the primary material for armor, lighter elements like leather and paper were also incorporated. These lighter materials were sometimes used to maintain mobility during combat.

Why Wear Armor at the Nomoi?

The Nomaoi is both a Shinto ritual praying for the prosperity and peace of the Soma region and a place where samurai honed their martial arts skills.

Samurai were martial arts experts. They wore armor, carried weapons, and were tasked with protecting people using their skills. At the Nomaoi, to uphold this tradition, the mounted warriors wear armor and demonstrate their martial arts skills. This appearance in armor also symbolizes the history and culture of the Soma region.

The Role of the Conch Shell

The conch shell (horagai) is one of the essential tools playing a crucial role in the Nomaoi events. Its loud sound is used as a signal in various situations.

Announcing the Start of the Ceremony

The sound of the conch shell resounding signals the beginning of the ceremony. Its solemn sound has the effect of focusing the minds of participants and spectators.

Organizing the Procession's Movement

The way the conch shell is blown indicates the timing for the procession to start moving and the pace of its progress.

Announcing Arrival at the Festival Grounds

The conch shell is also blown upon arrival at the festival grounds, its sound announcing the arrival to those around.

There are various patterns in the conch shell's blowing, and understanding their meanings allows for a deeper appreciation of the Nomaoi procession.

Characteristics and Function of the Jinbaori

The Jinbaori, as its name suggests, is a kimono worn in the midst of battle. In Nomaoi, some warriors wear the Jinbaori instead of armor. This garment features numerous design elements specifically tailored for combat.

Deep Back Slit

A deep slit in the back allows unrestricted movement when mounting a horse. It is also designed so that the sword sheath does not interfere when the sword is worn at the waist.

Sleeveless Design

The absence of sleeves allows for quick donning and enables it to be worn over armor. This functionality made the Jinbaori an essential item for warriors active on the battlefield.
